Atelier Veini is a brand for unique handmade designer quilts by a Finnish quilter Juulia Mäkipää.

The story

​

I have found my home in patchwork and quilting as a designer and artisan. I was inspired to delve into quilting and patchwork techniques in 2017 after seeing pictures of geometric quilts from the 18th and early 19th centuries. They made a deep impression on me with their details and the huge amount of hand sewing involved. I thought that such a quilt is a real luxury, an artwork in the form of an interior textile. That is how the story of Atelier Veini started: I got a vision that I want to become an expert in this technique myself and create my own, modern and distinctive version of what I saw.

 

Mission, philosophy and inspiration

 

My passion and mission is to renew the Finnish patchwork and quilting tradition and bring it to light in a fresh way as part of modern interior design. I want to add my own touch to Finnish design.

Atelier Veini's core is to explore the boundaries between art, craft and design: I design and make unique pieces that are often both textile art pieces and functional textiles at the same time. When I design a new piece, whether it is a bedcover, throw quilt or wall hanging, I visualize it as an eye-catching work of art in the living room or bedroom. I want my pieces to impress the viewer again and again with their details, colors and shapes.

 

I often find inspiration for my designs from different design objects and architecture from past decades. All the patchwork in my pieces is made using repurposed textiles. Limited choice of fabrics leads me to discover unexpected fabric and color combinations that create new interesting harmony. Seeing outdated, abandoned fabrics form a fresh and intriguing, stunning new patchwork is the driving force in my creative work.

My pieces are characterized by modern design, curved shapes, geometry, dreaminess, impression of layering, interesting details and intriguing fabric and color combinations.

Atelier Veini ♥ upcycling

​

All Atelier Veini pieces are upcycled, so they are always a sustainable choice. The patchwork of Atelier Veini's pieces is made using carefully selected repurposed fabrics sourced from Recycling Centers or charity flea markets. The reuse of discarded textiles is very important to me - I want to create beautiful interior textiles, but I do not want to contribute to the global problem of textile waste. In addition, as mentioned above, using repurposed textiles also adds its own fascinating factor to creation as the limited choice of fabrics pushes me to find interesting combinations of colors and patterns that my work are characterized by.

Quality and finishing

​

The pieces are made with care and high quality. Each Atelier Veini item is a unique, one of a kind piece. All pieces are hand quilted, and the binding is always hand stitched. This gives the quilts luxurious finishing: the products have no visible machine stitches at all. Hand quilting makes the quilts' look soft and authentic, and the distinguishable hand quilting stitches made with embroidery thread add character to the quilts.

Custom made quilts

 

Atelier Veini store has ready-made pieces, but in addition to them, I am also happy to make custom pieces tailored to the customer's taste and needs. At the beginning of the design process of custom pieces, your wishes are mapped out, for example, in terms of colours and shapes of the design. You can give feedback about the design along the design process, and I will start making the quilt only when you have approved the design.

In custom orders, the customer's own used fabrics can also be reused, in which case, for example, inherited fabrics that have become outdated in style get a new life, and the new products will also have special emotional value. The maker

​

Launching Atelier Veini fulfilled my long-term dream of starting my own design / craft company. My background is in marketing and teaching crafts and mathematics. After these two quite different previous career phases, I am happy do my second career shift, and as an entrepreneur use the knowledge and skills learned along the way in marketing, creative design and manual skills. I work from my atelier in Veininlaakso, Espoo, Finland.
